Pharmacy Customer Satisfaction: Building Customer Loyalty

Attaining a high level of customer satisfaction is crucial to achieving customer loyalty and business success. Many factors influence a customer's perspective of a pharmacy, such as convenience and store product and service offerings. However, timeliness, knowledge of insurance coverage, adequate supply of medications, and consistently delivering superior professional and customer service keeps customers coming back.  This program will present new results from the recent pharmacy customer satisfaction survey that identifies retail customers' perception of their pharmacy, their level of satisfaction, and loyalty to the store they use most often to fill prescriptions. These results can help achieve a better perspective on how to increase customer loyalty and satisfaction, as well as show trends on how perceptions have changed over time. This year's survey also covers all new topics such as member's perceptions of their Medicare Part D PDP and store services such as IVR, Prescription Kiosks, 24-hour customer service numbers, $4.00 generic prescriptions, Price Matching policies, Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Services, automation, compounding and prescription flavoring.

The Pharmacy Quality Alliance was established in April 2006, and is centered on developing performance measures for pharmacies and pharmacists. PQA's mission is to improve health care quality and patient safety through a process in which key stakeholders agree on a strategy for measuring performance at the pharmacy and pharmacist-levels; and reporting meaningful information to consumers, pharmacists, employers, payers, and other healthcare decision-makers to help make informed choices, improve outcomes and stimulate the development of new payment models. This session is designed to communicate to the audience what PQA performance measures are; how pharmacies will be evaluated utilizing these measures, and what types of demonstration projects are being pursued with what types of partners.

Medicaid Reform Update

Major changes in Medicaid pharmacy reimbursement are expected from implementation of the Federal Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. The new law reduced generic drug payments to pharmacies by billions of dollars by changing the way that the Federal Upper Limits for generic drugs is calculated. Manufacturer AMP data for brand and generic drugs – as well as Retail Survey Price (RSP) data - are being made available to the states and the public, creating greater transparency in pharmaceutical pricing. In addition, states will have greater flexibility in setting co-payments for prescription drugs in their Medicaid populations. Representatives from CMS and the states will explain these new changes and the timeline for their implementation. The session will also discuss the impact on community retail pharmacy.

Paving the Pathway: Complying With Pedigree Track and Trace Regulations

A growing number of states are looking at increasing an already safe and secure supply chain by requiring the use of electronic pedigrees and track and trace technologies.  However, because there is not consistency in approach by states that have already passed legislation, how should a company – or industry plan to comply with these laws?  Through EPC global, a standards development group, a roadmap has been defined for various companies in the supply chain to use as they begin to plan how to comply with these various laws and regulations.  This session will highlight the major steps companies might consider, from the perspective of a pharmacy, distributor and manufacturer, as they move towards complying with new legislation.

Update on the Community Health Centers and the PHS 340B Pharmaceutical Program

Expansion of community health centers remains a key component of the Administration's approach to increasing health care access to uninsured populations.  As a result, many community pharmacies may view these centers - and the clinic pharmacies that they operate - as competitors because these clinics generally have access to better pricing than retail pharmacies.  However, partnerships with these clinics may present opportunities for retail pharmacies to expand their services to communities and populations that have traditionally been underserved.  This session will provide an update on the 340B pharmaceutical pricing program and give retail pharmacies the opportunity to assess new business and patient care opportunities through partnerships with 340B entities.

Medicare Part B: Competitive Bidding for DME

Products and services provided under Medicare Part B continue to be an important part of the average retail pharmacy's business. However, CMS is embarking on a new program that would require Part B suppliers to competitively bid to provide certain items of durable medical equipment (DME) in 2007, limiting the number of suppliers that might be able to provide these products. This could eventually affect the ability of pharmacy providers to supply Medicare DME items to beneficiaries. Suppliers will also have to attain accreditation by meeting new CMS quality and business standards. This session will focus on what retail pharmacy operators need to know about changes to the Medicare Part B program for DME and how to retain this part of that business.

Patient Safety in Community Pharmacy

Health care consumers entrust the nation's community pharmacists to provide over 3 billion prescriptions a year. Fortunately, harmful dispensing errors represent an extreme minority, given all the prescription medications safely dispensed each year. Nevertheless, a study of 50 community pharmacies revealed a 1.7% dispensing error rate overall and harmful events have frequently been the subject of alarming reports by local and national news media. The problem clearly warrants more attention from the patient safety community. This session brings together a panel of experts familiar with community pharmacy patient safety issues, including a patient safety officer from a large chain pharmacy, a safety officer from one of the largest pharmacy benefits management firms, and a director of pharmacy from the payer community to discuss this important issue.

Meeting Payer Needs for Pharmacist Provided Services: The Time is Now
Solid evidence for the value of pharmacists in improving patient outcomes and reducing overall health care costs exists in some settings, e.g., integrated delivery systems, hospitals, and the VA. But payers point out that such compelling data is lacking for the community setting. The NACDS Pharmacy Industry Council (PIC) Value of Pharmacy Committee has been working with Comstock Consulting Group (CCG) on a collaborative project to produce a “roadmap” for community pharmacy to help the industry better understand how to transition to a broader role in the healthcare delivery system, demonstrate its' value, and get paid for its' capabilities. This session will draw on the project findings, highlighting the perspectives of both public and private payers. It will engage the audience in a discussion of the challenges faced by the industry in achieving recognition by payers, patients and providers, and payment for medical management services.
