Many new challenges will face community retail pharmacy in 2007 in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which now account for a significant percentage of the average pharmacy's prescription sales. This session will provide an in-depth discussion of these key government programs, and the current issues of which regional chain pharmacy operators should be aware. These include an update on new features of the Medicare Part D prescription drug program, competitive bidding for DME and pharmacy accreditation requirements, and changes in Medicaid reimbursement especially for generic drugs.

The Coalition for Community Pharmacy Action (CCPA) commissioned the 2006 Cost of Dispensing Study to accurately determine the current cost of dispensing prescription medications in retail pharmacies across the country and within each state. The findings from this study should have far-ranging ramifications for community retail pharmacy. This session will include an overview of the study and its key findings, as well as a discussion of the value of the results from both a government affairs and a pharmacy operations perspective.
