Federal and State Regulatory Update: Increasing Opportunities for Pharmacist-Provided Immunizations

The regulatory environment governing administration of vaccines by pharmacists continues to be shaped by ongoing regulatory developments in the states as well as federal payment policies.  In this webinar, we will take a closer look at the landscape of state regulations impacting pharmacist provided immunizations, distinctions between prescription and collaborative model requirements for immunization services, and examine how to obtain payment for Medicare-covered vaccines and their administration.

Challenges of Pharmacy-Based Immunization Services: Key Operational Issues

The financial success of any pharmacy practice depends on its efficiency. In this session, we will explore strategies for maximizing the efficiency of the operation of an immunization program. We will discuss various aspects of planning and day-to-day operations, including workflow and staffing, inventory issues, documentation, communication with other health care providers, patient identification, and interfacing with immunization registries. This discussion will address operational strategies for vaccinations that are integrated within the dispensing process, as well as vaccinations that are administered in a clinic setting. Specific barriers, and strategies for addressing those barriers, will be examined.

Emergency Preparedness and the Role of Immunizing Pharmacists

When there is a disaster or an emergency, pharmacists respond with a desire to help their communities and serve the public good.  Pharmacists will be able to provide the greatest assistance during an emergency if they are prepared and trained in advance.  Furthermore, proper planning can substantially reduce the impact of a pandemic or other emergency.  Pharmacists’ involvement in pandemic preparedness activities will help ensure that plans for making vaccines and other medications available to appropriate patients are implemented in a timely manner.  Pharmacists can also serve in other vital roles, such as acting as reliable sources of information, and overseeing distribution of resources.  In this session, we will examine lessons learned from previous emergencies, and use a case-based interactive approach to explore how pharmacists can best prepare to serve the public during a pandemic or other emergency.

Innovations in Vaccine Science

Vaccine development and delivery research is an ongoing endeavor.  New strategies are being investigated for the potential to accelerate vaccine production and expand the use of available vaccine in the event of a pandemic.  Needle-free methods for vaccine delivery that increase the safety and acceptability of vaccine administration are also being explored.  And, although many diseases and conditions have been effectively controlled through vaccine use, many potential vaccine targets remain under investigation.  In this session, we will review recent scientific advances that may potentially translate into future public health benefits.
